Resolve to Serve
“In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and The Word was God.” (Genesis 1:1)
The Hebrew word, “genesis” means beginning and January is the month of new beginnings. It begins a new year and it brings with it’s newness, a desire to start anew. Many people make what are called, “New Year Resolutions” where they vow to do something new or better during the year. There is also a firm resolve to do what was not done in the previous year or to improve one’s life in the new year.
Newness, improvements and bettering one’s self -- that is also what God wants for us. Jesus said He came so that we might have life more abundantly. Now, in order to live that abundant life, we must establish and maintain a relationship with God. You see, without God, we can do NOTHING!
We all tend to make great promises for this new year and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, weeks into our promises, we loose momentum and fall off. A missionary once wrote that God is not so much concerned with what we do for the doing comes from the being. By being in close relationship with The Word (God), we will do what God directs us to do. It is only by being in relationship with God that we are able to grow. As my pastor once said, God will begin to use spiritual muscles that we have never used. It may hurt for a while but we get stronger.
As we start this new year, let us exercise those spiritual muscles and do God’s will. Let that be our resolution for this new year, as well as future years.
